Incomplete spatiality

On the Soheil Soheili’s concert in Tehran Contemporary Music Festival

by Kamyar Salavati

The last program in the electronic section of the Tehran Contemporary Music Festival was the performance of Soheil Soheili. Although rearrangement of the seats in the hall and improvements in the sound quality caused the ambient sounds to be limited, in this performance real amplified ambient sounds were part of the performance.

If we want to note the tow ideas of this concert, one is the using of real, live amplified sounds of the environment, and the other is placing the four speakers at the four corners of the hall. By playing sonic lines from four different spots, these four speakers would give a move live feeling to the recorded, un-abstract and ambient sounds. This approach, to some extent, was similar to certain similar experiences in contemporary classical music; especially to Persepolis by Xenakis, in which musicians stand far from each other and the audience wanders between them and hears the piece differently based on his or her location. Soheili’s performance though had not paid enough attention to this aspect of distributing audio sources.

In addition to ambient sounds, almost exclusively consisted of traffic noises of Hafiz street, natural recorded sounds -especially bird songs- were used. These two personalities were accompanied by a third one which in contrast was abstract and musical: a dynamic, electronic melody-like (not exactly melodic) piece, which its relation with other parts was not clear. Using natural sounds moved the concert a bit close to a new-age or even bio-music program. while, car and traffic noises moved it away from it.
With this personification, and their constant replacement between bird songs and car noises, it was clear from the first few minutes that what narrative Soheili has thought about: cars have come and replaced the birds. if it would have had a more thought out and complicated expression, even this simple narrative could have had a more sophisticated manifestation. For example, there wasn’t any logic or reason to replacement of sounds and the constant replacement of the bird songs and the car noises. While, the placement of four speakers could be used for regulating and interpreting these replacements or indicating the domination of cars over birds.

Soheili’s performance was a half-baked execution of interesting ideas.

Darkness

On the Mohammadreza Govahi’s performance in the Tehran Contemporary Music Festival

by Mehdi Seyedinejad

The last day of the Tehran Contemporary Music Festival in the electronic/experimental section began with Mohamadreza Govahi’s performance. 90 degrees rotation in seats compared to yesterdays’ performances in the Hafiz set hall would catch the attention. The performance began with bass tones with dark horror inducing timbre. From the beginning, relatively acceptable sound quality compared to previous performances showed that this change in the formation of seats had a positive effect on the sound quality. After a few seconds from the beginning, Govahi put some water in waterphone and adds the transformed sound of the falling water to the bass line. Continuation of those dark bass sounds brings dark ambient music to mind; a genre that, considering his previous works, he is interested in. addition of distorted, violent, electric guitar like sounds and also the addition of siren sounds makes it clear that why the first part is composed in the memory of the firefighter of the tragedy of Plasco building fire.

The night of the disturbed dreams

On the concert of Nilper orchestra in the Tehran Contemporary Music Festival

by Kamyar Salavati

Tuesday night the Roudaki hall hosted the final concert of the Tehran Contemporary Music Festival, the concert of Nilper orchestra.

The repertoire consisted of five pieces.

The first one was a piece by Nima Atrkar Rowshan named “Sketch for String Orchestra”. While speaking of any representational content in music should be with extreme caution, the general development of the piece seemed heavily political: after the dominance of the soft, relatively long, lazy and drowsy hum of -obviously- more numerous violins and violas of the orchestra, suddenly Cellos come and disturb their dream with a crushing and masculine call -with high intensity- and create a tension and confusion that would gradually increase. Atrkar Rowshan’s piece was the story of this opposition and confrontation of forces: outnumbered but forceful cellos, and numerous but easily malleable violins and violas. In the end, after the settlement of this confrontation, again it was the weak cry of the violins that would rise again like a phoenix.

Another piece was a lesser known work of Kambiz Roshanravan named “Concerto for Flute and String Orchestra” (1972). On a general take, it seems that this piece is not so relevant to the rest of the repertoire and disrupts its harmony. It’s general form too, was not so dissimilar to succession of allegro-adagio-allegro of a symphony. Flute soloist’s performance in certain phrases with continuous dynamic intensity was admirable.
Of the other premier pieces of the concert, there was a piece by Jeanne Strieder who is more of a rock-metal musician. A work filled with intertwining and sometimes rising and tension inducing dissonant and glissando.
In addition to these three pieces, Nilper performed a piece by Kosecka (premiere) and a work by the Estonian Erkki-Sven Tüür (Insula Deserta for String Orchestra).

In the end and more than anything we should appreciate the efforts of the members of Nilper, an orchestra that despite the limited audience and consequently its modest financial resources, continues to work with persistence and commitment.

Maybe the fact that this performance of Nilper had one of the biggest audiences of the festival, and also more than half of its repertoire was written exclusively for performance by this orchestra, is a result of this persistence and perseverance.

Music for the Fleeting Birds

A Long way to go

On The wind ensemble of Tehran Contemporary Music Festival

by Arvin Sedaghatkish

The wind ensemble of Tehran Contemporary Music Festival, as auspicious as its institution, has a long way ahead. This can easily be seen from this moderate three-piece concert too. Members of the ensemble have not used to each other in the long journey of practice sessions and performances.

The first and only piece of repertoire written for this band, Music for the Fleeting Birds, by Pēteris Vasks full of replacement of small musical figures between different instruments of the band and that incoordination -despite the unusual low tempo of the performance- constantly threatens its coherence. Especially in the moments that number and density of these replacements would increase, everything would collapse and obscure the structure of the piece.

Compared to the first piece, Five by John Cage- which is a piece independent from an instrumental or vocal combination of the band- due to its multi-layer structure, slower movement and more static notes with wide time span -which made coordination easier- was less affected by this incoordination. Although in performing this same piece a certain amount of unease could be heard in the mixing of the instrumental timbres, the structure wouldn’t be heard seriously altered, as the elements changed by this new band was not the key structural elements.

In performing the last piece, In C by Terry Riley, this problem of synchrony and coordination showed itself most vividly. Unusual slow tempo resulted in some of the perception-based elements being lost. Besides, here there was no sign of that rainbow spectrum of sounds, developing dynamic and constant underlying structure and its interaction with other fleeting figures. As a result, instead of figures to be heard as a moving flow of fleeting events against a relatively stable and stabilizing movement, that moves in and out without any interruption, it sounded like unrelated parts and irrelevant to the Whole.

Esteem of the artist’s presence

On Ivo Nilsson’s performance in Tehran Contemporary Music Festival

by Mani Jafarzadeh

One man and his Trombone on the stage? That’s it? Surely persuading an audience to sit down and listen for an hour is not an easy feat. But the writer believes that the Swedish Ivo Nilsson raised well to this not so easy task. From his first moment on the stage when he stood facing the listeners -though in this case the watching audience is more appropriate- to perform Sequenza by Luciano Berio, it was clear that he knows his game. As far as I remember, in most cases it is common for the performer of Berio’s piece to appear on the stage with a clown’s clothing and makeups. But Nilsson didn’t do this. Maybe because such an appearance would affect the rest of the performance and changing the cloths and makeup would take some time. But right from his first moment on the stage, without any external makeup, the clown was visible and he persuaded the audience that they are at the presence of not only a skillful trombone player, but a competent performance artist. In other pieces of this concert too, the spectacular presence of the artist’s manner and act added such an extra dimension to the works that -to some extent- moved them away from being absolute music.

In choosing the repertoire taste, intelligence and knowledge had worked well hand in hand. The two first pieces by Berio and Scelsi were performed with total mastery. In my estimation, if you name these two composers in front of our more “Radical” contemporary music enthusiast friends, without any hesitation they would declare them “classic” and not contemporary music! But Nilsson, with an admirable command, had placed these pieces next to some of his own works and one other fellow Swedish composer and also a piece by Idin Samimi Mofakham that in a way that you could clearly see and appreciate the evolution of what we call contemporary music.

The clear and thought-out sonority, complete awareness of Mise-en-scène in relation to each piece, together with extremely brilliant personal interpretations of the works made Nilsson’s concert a master-class though with not so little students missing.

Night of Iranian composers

On the flute recital of Kelariz Keshavarz in the Fourth Tehran Contemporary Music Festival

by Mehdi seyedinejad

Third night of stage performances of the fourth Tehran Contemporary Music Festival at Roudaki hall was dedicated to the flute recital of Kelariz Keshavarz. This was the only concert in the festival with pieces chosen solely from Iranian composers. Ten pieces from different composers were presented; from Alireza Mashayekhi to Said Alijani and Amin Sharifi. Except the two pieces by Alireza Mashayekhi, the rest of the repertoire have been composed between 2016-2018 and this was the premier for some of them. As by the performer, this recital is a part of a greater project called “New Waves of Iran” which is going to perform works of twenty Iranian composers. Except one piece by Ali Radman –“Cold Moments is Darrus”- composed for flute and electronic sounds, the rest of the repertoire was performed by solo flute.

“In Search of Lost Time” by Alireza Mashayekhi is the first piece -surprisingly out of the pre-announced program- that greets us. Kelariz Keshavarz’s bold and brave performance of this piece suggests a standard and quality performance. Each piece had its own challenge for the player: “The Sleepwalker Sonnet” by Rouzbeh Rafiei demanded multiple timbres; “Monologue for the loneliness of composer II” by Amin Sharifi required the player to present the theme from Stravinsky’s “Rite of Spring” in the middle of different variations; and discovering the logic of phrasing was the challenge of Alireza Mashayekhi’s “Permutation” (one of the first flute pieces of Mashayekhi composed in 1968). Despite all these, Keshavarz moved from one challenge to the next and performed a clear execution to the audience. Part of this high quality was a result of the performers understanding of importance of silence in interpreting and performing contemporary music pieces. In the absence of rhythm and tonality, silence plays a crucial role in understanding the articulation and recognizing each phrase and longitude of each silence (which is left for the player to decide is some cases) can be vitally important in understanding different parts of a piece.

On the orbit of balance

On the Ambaát ensemble’s concert at the Fourth Tehran Contemporary Music Festival

by Mehdi Seyedinejad

Second day of electronic/experimental section of the festival was dedicated to electronic performance accompanied by electric guitar, by the Icelandic ensemble Ambaát. The ensemble consists of Pan Thorarensen and Þorkell Atlason. From the beginning we are engaged with a slow and contemplative series of chords which progress on after the other. In each sonic level, and with a slow gradient, pitches move to the highest intensity and then fade slowly. After around 6 minutes from the beginning, suddenly and in a high point, this atmosphere is replaced with natural sounds (like sounds of birds and water). Then again, the previous atmosphere slowly re-emerges and tries to merge into this sounds. Gradually, the initial atmosphere takes shape but this time we can hear short, few note melodies in the background.

These three parts develop from each other with ease and this makes the audience to constantly look for new sonic events. As such, we are faced with a one-hour continuous performance with smaller parts within it that although represent themselves in a smooth succession, but they are distinct. In this regard, it seems that Ambaát tries to give a kind of formal regularity to its work and by this takes the audience with itself.

Appearance of repetitive rhythmic motives in certain parts indicates that Ambaát does not shy away from being affected by different types of music in its experimental path. In addition, and in line with this approach, thematically loaded melodies and chords with tonal associations have a certain amount of significance in the work. This can remind us of progressive rock concerts and also, continuous repetition of a melody and gradual addition and resolving of sonic layers creates an ecstasy similar to of ambient music. Ambaát chooses an approach in its experimental path that is affected by various musical sources and puts each one in an orbit and creates a system of balance. Not so much dependent to search and playing with new timbres and not necessarily dependent to melody, rhythm and form.
