On Eleknoise ensemble at Tehran Contemporary Music Festival

by Kamyar Salavati

Radif Project, a repertoire for Setar and electronic sounds, composed by Eleknoise trio ensemble was performed by the same ensemble in Tehran Contemporary Music Festival. This project, as its name indicates, is an attempt for associating between Radif and electronic music. It is obvious that in such a performance, opening new paths, potentials and meanings for Radif music or electronic music in their new interactive context is of substantial importance. A significantly contemporary host has a guest from a non-modern musical culture in an eastern country.

In short, this and only this was the concert: limited references  as a couple of motives in Daramad-e Shur, then almost the exact representation of Salmak (without variation, without any innovation or being interpretive), resolving the rest of this Gusheh in a semi-noise sound, moving to Owj in Shur, emphasizing on Shahed of Dashti and at the end closing the piece with a part of Reng-e Sharashoub. In fact, the program began with Daramad and ended with Reng. Such a repertoire would be considered conservative even in a scholastic reading; let alone in a program that carries “experimental music” in its name.

In addition, there was no meaningful relationship between what Setar was performing and the background electronic sounds. Simplified Radif-based music was up rooted from another place as a form of raw material and with complete severance was superimposed on electronic sounds and some pictures which were reminding of psychedelic performances. There was no special identity for the background noise as well. Their exceptional uniformity hardy could establish a sort of relationship with Shur and Dashti. Technical limitations of the Setar player was not helping this mess either. Even this simple and insignificant concert was suffering from inadequate performance skill.

Leaving all these aside, conditions of the venue was extremely unsuitable for music performance: traffic noise from Hafiz street and the hall’s sizable cooler system have become a part of the concert and thanks to poor sound design in the venue, Setar was hardly audible.

Vindication of the body

On the performance of Barbara Borowicz and ‌Bartosz Sałdan

by Kamyar Salavati

Borowicz and Sałdan’s repertoire, except its premier pieces which were generally composed by fellow citizens of the performers, emphasized on “body” as an integrated part of the music. One of the famous prior performances of Borowicz is Stockhausen’s Harlekin, written for clarinet and dance; in which the sound of the dancer’s steps becomes part of the music. Having this in mind, considering such pieces by her and Sałdan was not surprising.

Temazcal, the most famous piece of its composer Álvarez is a piece for two Maracas and tape (electroacoustic sounds). Maraca which is a bit similar to finger-bell in Iranian music would be put in the player’s hands and upon playing instead of the shape of an instrument the movements of the player will be seen. Here, regardless of the relationship between the recorded sounds and player’s performance, and of course somewhat ambiguous dramatic development of the piece, it is the movements of the player that gives meaning to the piece. Meanings that of course can be different or paradoxical. In Sałdan’s performance though, this interpretive/role playing side seemed less central. Proteus by Jesus Torres too was written for percussions; instruments in which the body (chest and abdomen) have become an integral and inseparable part of them. Also, in Ceci n’est une balle that was written for body percussion, in addition to recorded sounds emphasized on the sounds of the performer’s body.

In these pieces body, which is one of the old companions of the European music (and from a certain point with development of specialization in classical music and its performance in concert halls parted its way), is being vindicated. Therefor it is not surprising that these embodied pieces had strong relationship with traditions other than European classical music; traditions in which the body is a part of their performance. As a result, this performance had a severely multi-colored structure: Temazcal strongly rooted in South American music, Proteus with signs of Spanish music, Ceci n’est une balle with references to popular music and street theaters, and Reflection No. 6 inspired by music of Japan.

Cautiously contemporary

On the first day of marathon of performances in the Fourth Tehran Contemporary Music Festival

 by Mani Jafarzadeh

Contemporary music has a limited audience but this small number can’t even reach an agreement on their subject of passion; So far that they won’t reach a decisive common understanding on “What is the contemporary music?” This makes performing for such complicated audience a very trying task.

This difficulty presented itself in the first day of this “marathon” of performances, to the point that some of the more “radical” experts didn’t recognize certain performances as “contemporary” in their view and described certain manners of performance as old or classic.

I, in contrary, don’t consider the contemporary music as a movement “fashionable” in music “festivals” around the world; but as a part of History of Art which began after the world war II that continues to present. As such, approaches of the young composers and performers were far more important than which “extended techniques” or “new extended techniques” they use that are “fashionable” today. These “techniques”, in my understanding, are parts of a bigger whole that now, gradually, begins to find its meaning in the Iranian artist’s mind. So, their importance is secondary.

What caught my attention was the rational take of the younger generation. We know that the main problem of Iranian music is inadequate skill in performance of international instruments. Here, young composers confronted this issue with a considerable intelligence and wrote pieces to be performable by this generation of performers. Musicians too, tried their best to execute the written pieces correctly and clearly; and succeeded too.

We should keep in mind that it’s been a long time that the unreasonable expectations of performance repertoire have moved the contemporary music to the point that it is seriously hard to go through a “concert”. Poor audiences think this torture is part of this music’s nature. But any kind of music, performed correctly, is interesting and enjoyable.

First day’s marathon was clear, coherent and interesting collection which was resulted from a smart, attentive and cautious approach to “being contemporary”. You might object that being contemporary does not go well with cautious. To this, dear reader, I should answer this: where we stand today, everything should be in line with cautious and attentiveness (which are inseparable parts of Iranian culture) otherwise they would be fundamentally incoherent.

First day of “Tehran contemporary music festival” was a successful day.
