Music for the Fleeting Birds
A Long way to go
On The wind ensemble of Tehran Contemporary Music Festival
by Arvin Sedaghatkish
The wind ensemble of Tehran Contemporary Music Festival, as auspicious as its institution, has a long way ahead. This can easily be seen from this moderate three-piece concert too. Members of the ensemble have not used to each other in the long journey of practice sessions and performances.
The first and only piece of repertoire written for this band, Music for the Fleeting Birds, by Pēteris Vasks full of replacement of small musical figures between different instruments of the band and that incoordination -despite the unusual low tempo of the performance- constantly threatens its coherence. Especially in the moments that number and density of these replacements would increase, everything would collapse and obscure the structure of the piece.
Compared to the first piece, Five by John Cage- which is a piece independent from an instrumental or vocal combination of the band- due to its multi-layer structure, slower movement and more static notes with wide time span -which made coordination easier- was less affected by this incoordination. Although in performing this same piece a certain amount of unease could be heard in the mixing of the instrumental timbres, the structure wouldn’t be heard seriously altered, as the elements changed by this new band was not the key structural elements.
In performing the last piece, In C by Terry Riley, this problem of synchrony and coordination showed itself most vividly. Unusual slow tempo resulted in some of the perception-based elements being lost. Besides, here there was no sign of that rainbow spectrum of sounds, developing dynamic and constant underlying structure and its interaction with other fleeting figures. As a result, instead of figures to be heard as a moving flow of fleeting events against a relatively stable and stabilizing movement, that moves in and out without any interruption, it sounded like unrelated parts and irrelevant to the Whole.
